Zoetrope from VIA still in June?
VIA's entry into the world of graphics cards is said to be getting closer and closer, now June is rumored to be the release period for the graphics chip, also known as Savage XP. The only other news concerns the memory connection.
So the Savage XP should now have a 128 bit wide data bus for which have built-in 64 or 128 MB DDR RAM. With an expected clock rate of 350 MHz, a bandwidth of 5.7 GB/s would be possible. In terms of speed, the Savage XP should be comparable to a GeForce4 MX 420, but it is fully DirectX 8.1 compatible, has a programmable T&L unit and is capable of dual monitors. At an estimated price of $ 15, the Savage XP is very affordable and will fight for shares with SiS and Nvidia in the lower end of the market. With the Savage XP, VIA ventures into the desktop area of graphics cards and will launch the 'Columbia' competitor to the GeForce4 Ti later this year, which is also said to have a very favorable price/performance ratio.
