Xbox without Nvidia?

It actually seemed clear that after the initial back and forth an Nvidia graphics chip should be used in Microsoft's X-Box, but this is apparently only half the story. As reported by 3D Chipssatz, Microsoft is said to have reached an agreement with GigaPixel, a subsidiary of 3dfx (or the existing one was changed), in which the company is given until July 2000 to develop a better graphics solution than Nvidia's.

Actually it seemed clear that after the initial back and forth an Nvidia graphics chip in Microsoft's X-Box for Use should be made, but apparently this is only half the story. As reported by 3D Chipset, Microsoft is said to have reached an agreement with GigaPixel, a subsidiary of 3dfx (or the existing one was changed), in which the company is allowed until July 2000 to develop a better graphics solution than Nvidia's. Apparently, in this case, Microsoft can terminate the contract with Nvidia by means of a contractual clause in order to use the GigaPixel solution. But whether it will be so easy to beat Nvidia in its royal discipline, the graphics chips, is the question.
