Xbox officially launched
At this year's CES (Consumer Electronic Show) in Las Vegas, Bill Gates personally demonstrated the Xbox game console. Microsoft is thus preparing for the upcoming battle for the favor of console gamers, which is being carried out together with Sony and its Playstation 2, as Microsoft does not want to miss this lucrative market sector.
The Xbox presented at the CES is about 20 cm square and about 8 cm high. A large X immediately catches the eye on the top, the slot for the DVD is in neon green. A game should be loaded and started within eight seconds of inserting a DVD. The Xbox shown is already a quasi-final version of the console. Inside the console runs an Intel Pentium III with 733 MHz and a graphics chip from NVidia with 250 MHz. There are four sockets for the controllers on the front, which are supplemented by an Ethernet port. Furthermore, an 8 GB hard drive ensures that the games last played do not have to be reloaded. Gates promised, contrary to previous announcements, to bring the Xbox to the US market in autumn 2001. The price should be around 300 US dollars at launch.
