WinZip 8.1 SR-1 closes security hole

Nico Mak Computing has published a service release for WinZip 8.1, which fixes a security hole that has existed in all previous WinZip versions. ZIP archives have not been affected by this since version 8.0, but all other supported formats.

When opening of an archive with a file whose path contains a reference to the parent folder ('..'), WinZip now displays a warning message. The reason for this warning is that files with such path information will be extracted to destinations outside the folder hierarchy you have specified, which could be used by malicious people to overwrite important files on your system with the files in the archive.

For those who buy version 8.1 the update is free of charge, as was to be expected, after all, only the above-mentioned bug will be fixed and otherwise nothing will be changed according to this information page . In addition to the English version, the German version is already available for download!
