Windows ME in the test: The biggest failure since Windows existed
Internet Explorer 5.5
Windows Me also includes the latest version of Internet Explorer 5.5. That Microsoft was not so sure what the finished Explorer 5.5 is, shows the exact version number of Internet Explorer, which in Windows Me is 5.50.4134.0100. The Explorer 5.5, which can be downloaded from the Microsoft servers, has the version number 5.50.4134.0600. This in turn means nothing else than that when you first access the Internet, or later from time to time, you are confronted with a message that a new Explorer is available.
In terms of the user interface, nothing has changed compared to its predecessor. The print preview is one of the few innovations that should have been available from the start. The somewhat faster image build-up shows that many of the other advances are hidden inside the browser. Such as the 128-bit encryption, the possibility of defining transparent background colors and other extensions for web developers.
The plus package for Windows 98 brought it, Windows 2000 had it, and Windows Me is also integrated to have. We're talking about Compressed Folders support. This function, which can be seen as very practical, displays packed files in * .ZIP and * .CAB format as folders from which individual files can be extracted, ie unpacked, if necessary.
Furthermore, Windows Me includes Media Player 7.0 with all its advantages compared to the 6.x version. The Media Player 7.0 represents the first step towards the Windows.NET initiative. It contains a function that can be used to equip your portable MP3 player. The use of SRS WOW audio technology is intended to increase the sound experience, as bass and surround effects are reproduced more realistically on the PC boxes.
All other innovations are more or less so inconspicuous that they can be ignored.
