Videos and 3D games on the phone
Just a few days after ST Microelectronis gave up the KYRO graphics chip, Imagination Technologies and ST Microelectronis now want to develop basic technologies for mobile multimedia entertainment.
They announced their pocket multimedia at 3GSM World in Cannes Platform (PMM), which should make it possible to play audio and video material and to use 3D graphics with minimal power consumption. The heart of the PMM will be the energy-saving RISC processor PowerVR MBX. The PowerVR MBX should be able to process up to 4 million triangles/second, with a clock rate of 120 MHz. The chip, which is only 6 square millimeters in size, is manufactured using 0.13 micron technology and is said to consume only 60mW at a clock rate of 50 MHz. The PowerVR architecture was already used in the Sega Dreamcast game console and contains acceleration functionality for 2D, 3D and video.
