VIA presents new Firewire chip

The manufacturer VIA, known for its chipsets, today presented a new communication chip that has two connections for the IEEE 1394 interface, with speeds of 400 Mbps.

The chip has this already about the new IEEE 1394a 2.0 standard, which was only recently adopted. The module can also be connected directly to an IDE bridge, making it suitable as an interface for external storage media. The IEEE 1394 interface is better known as the Firewire interface and is mainly used in video cameras and recorders. The new Audigy cards of the Soundblaster series also have a Firewire interface with which simple peer-to-peer connections are possible.
