VIA C3 in 0.13 micron design
VIA today presented the first processor with 0.13 micron technology at the third largest computer trade fair in the world, Computex. Competitive products from AMD and Intel are currently still manufactured in 0.18 microns (nVidia GeForce3 0.15 micron).
The processors are called C3 and are manufactured in Texas. The first models will still run at a moderate 800 MHz, but the C3 will soon also run with values beyond the 1 GHz limit. According to VIA President Wen-Chi Chen, the chip, which VIA claims to have paid particular attention to low power consumption and low production costs, should be 'what the market has been asking for for a long time.' However, neither manufacturers who will sell the chip nor possible prices could be named. VIA already presented the first C3 offspring a few weeks ago, but it is only clocked at 733 MHz and produced in 0.15 microns. Intel will present the first processor with 0.13 microns in July, AMD has not yet announced any dates.
