VG Media charges fees on EPG data

As a GmbH for the exploitation of copyrights and ancillary copyrights of media companies, VG Media will from the beginning of 2008 charge fees for the provision of EPG data from numerous private TV stations. Free EPGs such as TV-Browser are forced to no longer offer a significant portion of their data.

TV-Browser is an electronic TV magazine that distributes TV data from almost all channels available in Germany via a convenient and easily configurable program. As of Tuesday, this data will be charged a fee by the media company VG Media, which represents these broadcasters. The exact amounts and a list of all 29 affected broadcasters can be found in a PDF document provided by the company.

On the TV-Browser homepage, the following broadcasters in particular are named as affected :

  • 9Live
  • Comedy Central
  • DSF
  • kabel eins
  • MTV
  • N24
  • Nick
  • n-tv
  • ProSieben
  • RTL2
  • RTL Television
  • Sat.1
  • Super RTL
  • tv Gusto
  • VIVA
  • VOX

Since TV-Browser will remain free as an open source project and should not forego the usual scope of information, is currently looking for possible solutions for the situation . In this context, a signature campaign was started on GoPetition.com. There are currently almost 14,000 signatures to be found there.
