Telekom is not allowed to sell cable networks to Liberty
On Monday of this week, Telekom received the message from the Federal Cartel Office that the sale of the local cable TV companies in Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Brandenburg, Berlin and Saxony to Liberty Media Corporation was prohibited.
Deutsche Telekom Kabel-Services GmbH, DeTeKS for short, and MediaServices GmbH have these cable companies including the local network level 4 Companies offered for sale. On January 31 of this year, the Cartel Office rejected the project. Telekom regrets the decision of the Federal Cartel Office, as Telekom assumed that the sale would be very pro-competitive. Leading competition scientists also agreed on this point and spoke out in favor of a sale. On the part of the Federal Cartel Office there was a demand that the cable network should be expanded for the use of Internet and telephone connections after the sale to Liberty, which Liberty did not agree to. After this rejection, Telekom is now looking for new buyers for the cable networks.
