Supercomputer with 128 CPUs in a rack

A supercomputer with 128 processors housed in a single rack is presented today by SGI. The Origin 3900 will be able to access 64GByte RAM with its 128 MIPS processors. The basic equipment includes only 4 CPUs and 512MByte main memory.

The top configuration with 128 CPUs and 64GByte RAM will be available for a mere 2.9 million dollars. The compact design means it can be used in aircraft or ships, says SGI manager Addison Snell. A supercomputer equipped with SGI's own Itanium-2 processors is to follow in a few months. This should then contain 32 processors per rack and be delivered with Linux as the operating system.
