Storage prices continue to rise

DRAM prices usually fall before and after the Chinese New Year. Not so this year. Samsung and Hynix agreed with their main customers to increase prices by 15 to 20 percent.

This price increase is the sixth since December last year. The price of the 128Mb DRAM chips has now risen above the $ 4 mark. That means that the big chip manufacturers are reaping a hefty profit. Samsung announced that the storage business will be back in the black in January. The prices for memory chips are set every two weeks and are based on the current chip market. The current prices will probably remain constant until the third quarter, despite the lower demand. The production of faster memory chips that require more memory, combined with reduced chip production, stabilizes prices.
