SiS with RDRAM chipset at the end of July
But today the news came up somewhat surprisingly that Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) would like to bring an RDRAM chipset with the name 'R658' onto the market at the end of the month. Actually, this chipset was only expected in a few months.
The SiS658 will support PC1066 Rambus and if the Rumors prove to be true even with 32-bit modules and ECC. In the future, SiS will no longer only cover the mainstream market with the SiS645 (DX) and the upcoming SiS648, but would also like to gain a foothold in the high-end segment. Which motherboard manufacturers will offer boards with the new Rambus chipset has unfortunately not yet been made public. Some manufacturers still seem to be unsure whether they should also rely on SiS when it comes to RDRAM, since the market is already well covered by Intel's own chipsets. With the presentation at the end of July we will certainly be able to get more information here.
