Seagate Ships New Record Hard Drive
The world's largest hard drive manufacturer Seagate Technology today announced the availability of a new hard drive generation that offers up to 80 GB of storage capacity on just two platters and this with a data density of 32.3 GBit per square inch (5 GBit per square centimeter).
This is the sixth continuation of the U hard drive series, which was specially designed for the mass market. With the 'new' U series, Seagate has now been able to reduce the access time by 35 percent, to 8.9 milliseconds, and this at a very moderate rotation speed of 5400 revolutions per minute. Ultra ATA/100 is supported as the interface, whereby the hard disk can fall back on a 2MByte internal cache. However, Seagate did not specify the prices for the new hard drives in stores.
