Seagate introduces SerialATA hard drives

Seagate presents two new hard drives for PCs: the Barracuda 7200.7 and the Barracuda 7200.7 Plus. The new drives use improved read/write head and medium technologies and thus achieve a storage capacity of 80GB per disc.

This means that the Barracuda hard drive family has been expanded to capacities of up to 160 GB. The new models come with either a native Serial ATA or a parallel ATA interface. The Barracuda 7200.7 Plus has an integrated standard cache of 8 megabytes (MB) and capacities of 160 and 120 GB. The Barracuda 7200.7 comes with a 2 MB cache and, depending on the model, with capacities of 160, 120, 80 or 40 GB. Seagate's patented SoftSonic Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) motor makes the Barracuda what it claims to be the quietest PC hard drive on the market.

The robust hard drive design of the Barracuda 7200.7 can withstand vibrations of up to 350 Gs in Stand idle. The circuit board itself is recessed to protect it from damage. A lowered motor housing and a connector with a protective knob also prevent damage when handling the panels. In addition, the new hard disk chipset is more integrated than ever before: A single chip takes over both the read channel and the interface functions.

Seagate is also presenting the new Barracuda 5400.1 to meet the needs of system integrators who develop cost-sensitive products. It has a cost-optimized single head configuration with 40 GB of storage capacity and a performance level of 5400 rpm. Because it is 25 percent thinner than traditional PC hard drives, system ventilation improves. It can therefore be integrated into fanless systems. It also works with Seagate's patented SoftSonic Fluid Dynamic Bearing motors.

Unfortunately Seagate doesn't have one for any of the hard drivesPrice mentioned, but delivery is said to have already started. Unfortunately, we are still in the dark about the warranty periods.

Upon request, Seagate informed us that the warranty period is unfortunately only one year and that the prices are here and there had not yet been decided.
