Seagate Announces New Hard Drive Series

With the Barracuda ATA V, Seagate announces a new hard drive series that is characterized by the high density of 60 GB per disc. The beginning will be the 120 GByte version, which gets by with only two disks due to the high density per disc.

Another feature is the storage by means of liquid bearings that should make the 7,200 rpm Barracuda ATA V almost inaudible. ATA100 and serial ATA are used as interfaces. In addition, the Barracuda ATA V with ATA100 interface accesses a 2 MB cache, the serial ATA version accesses a full 8 MB. This should enable transfer rates of over 71 Mbytes/s with an access time of 9 ms with the ATA100 interface. With serial ATA more than 150 MByte/s can be achieved. Seagte states that the ATA100 variant will be available next month, and the serial ATA version will be officially presented this week at the PC Expo in News York. Nothing is known about the price and other memory sizes.
