We used a total of three reliable benchmarks to determine the CPU utilization dur ch to be able to judge the sound and effect generation.
Audio Winbench 99
The Audio Winbench 99 from Ziff Davis is a tried and tested one Means to measure the CPU usage while sounds of different quality are played via DirectSound. The Soundblaster Audigy did not surprise us, only with the SiXPack DirectSound no longer had access to the hardware Voices when EAX was deactivated, which significantly affected the performance.
For the sake of clarity we have summarized all values again in an average.
The Winbench speaksclear language. Anyone who thinks that by switching off EAX in the SiXPack's ControlPanel you will gain processor performance is immensely mistaken - the processor suddenly has to calculate all the votes. But that's not too dramatic, who will buy a 6-channel sound card and then turn off EAX and all Sensaura (A3D) support? After all, the CPU utilization of the SiXPack is halved if the card is operated with standard settings, but on average it is still double that of the Audigy. The chip from Creative is thus far faster, at least in the synthetic environment.
