The German-French EUREKA project BlueSpot for rewritable DVDs with the help of blue lasers is being supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and by France with a sum of approx. 11 million marks each in the period 2000-2003.
The aim of the project is to use blue semiconductor lasers to develop a technology for the first time with which DVDs can be rewritten several times. DVD players with this technology would have a playing time of over 4 hours and a storage volume of 15 gigabytes. Today's DVD players are equipped with red semiconductor lasers and only have a storage volume of 4.6 gigabytes.
