RealVideo 9 presented

Today RealNetworks introduced a new video compression technology to the public. According to the company, RealVideo 9 should increase the quality of RealVideo 8 by around 30 percent. The new technology is supposed to offer a quality like MPEG-4, but at only half the bit rate.

This could RealVideo 9 will become a competitor for MPEG-4: VHS quality should be achieved at 160 kbit/s and DVD quality should be available from 500 kbit/s. In addition, all HDTV formats and resolutions are supported. The Joint Video Team, which is currently working on the next version of MPEG-4, will also benefit from this new technology, because Real has made parts of RealVideo 9 available to the team. At the same time, a new audio compression called 'Real Audio Surround' was presented, which enables multi-channel surround sound from a bit rate of 44 kbit/s. The two new formats can be played with RealOnePlayer or RealPlayer for Mac. Support for Linux and PocketPC should follow soon.
