Razer Boomslang 2000 in the test: ball mouse with 2000 dpi for gamers
The installation of the software is completely uncomplicated, because after inserting the driver CD starts automatically. You just have to note that the mouse must not be connected before the software is installed, but only after the installation. This is possible during the reboot, which the installation requires. If you connect the Boosmlang to the USB port, it is not necessary to switch off the PC. However, if you connect it to the PS2 port, the PC must first be switched off completely so that the mouse can be connected.
After the reboot, the software opens automatically and you can start with the configuration. The big disadvantage of the old software in version 1.2.01 becomes apparent immediately. The mouse has 5 buttons, but in software version 1.2.01 only 4 buttons can be assigned differently. Keys 4 and 5 have to be assigned the same function in the old software, which is certainly not in the spirit of the inventor, as the 5th key is superfluous. An update to the current driver (version 2.017) fixes this problem.
In the new version, all buttons can be operated independently of each otherconfigure. In addition to the most important Windows functions, you can assign a function to each key yourself. For example, you can assign the function Alt + F4 to a key to close a program with a simple mouse click. The shortcut Ctrl + N to open another Internet Explorer window, like the function Ctrl + Alt + Del, is a very useful shortcut :). Furthermore, each button can also be switched off.
As a special highlight, button 4 can be assigned the 'On-the-fly sensitivity' function, so that you can easily change the sensitivity of the mouse without always having to Having to start software, which is a great advantage especially in games. If you press the 'on-the-fly sensitivity' button in conjunction with the mouse wheel, only a small slider is displayed on the screen, which, as in the software, goes from 1 to 10, with 10 being the fastest setting. The controller does not have to be displayed, but then precise setting is no longer possible.
Of course, the 'on-the-fly sensitivity' function can also be switched off. However, it is not advisable to set the sensitivity above 4 or 5, since with each setting above the mouse pointer only flits across the screen and controlled control is hardly possible. At 10 you can barely see the mouse pointer, it's that fast. Under 'Advanced Settings' you can also set the cursor acceleration and even adjust the sensitivity for the x and y axes independently of each other. So who wantsthe fact that the mouse pointer moves faster to the side than up with the same length of movement, for example, will find everything your heart desires here. I haven't been able to find such setting options in any other software so far. Of course, the standard menu items that regulate the double-click or scroll wheel speed are also available.
In addition to these setting options, the software offers test areas on which the changes can be viewed more closely. For all those who use the Boomslang on the PS2 port, the software also offers the option of increasing the PS2 rate to 200MHz. In no case should you do without the software, as a tiny touch of the mouse without installed software is enough to scare the mouse pointer across the entire screen. All in all, the latest version of the software leaves nothing to be desired.
