Radeon 8500 becomes Radeon 9100
The marketing strategists at ATi don't sleep either, and so an old graphics card quickly becomes a new one. In order to close the gap between the Radeon 9000Pro and 9500Pro, the Radeon 8500 is now the Radeon 9100.
Not only Nvidia confuses buyers with strange and inappropriate names, now ATi adapts to this. The Radeon 9100, based on the R200, is still very popular with manufacturers, as it offers comparable and sometimes better performance than a GeForce 4 Ti4200 from Nvidia. Compared to its own products, the 9100 plays the 9000Pro loosely on the wall, which is one of the reasons why the naming fits quite well. This means that ATi has again a powerful graphics card for the masses of PC owners and buyers, and only names the cards so that they fit into the current nomenclature. No cards are available yet and the prices are not known either, but the first cards based on the Radeon 9100 can be expected in the near future.
