Quicktime 6 is here

After a long wait, a new version of Quicktime has been released. Version 6 of the multimedia player from Apple is now available. However, it is only a 'Public Preview' version, but offers a number of new features compared to its predecessor.

Quicktime 6 has actually been ready for some time. Due to a license dispute with the 'owners' of MPEG-4, the release was delayed. The new preview version supports some new features. With 'Instant-On' it is possible to jump to different parts of the stream without having to download the entire file first. On Mac OS X you can also view images in JPEG 2000 format, the successor to today's JPEG, and Flash 5 content. AAC, an audio format with more efficient compression than MP3, for example, is also supported. The Quicktime 6 Public Preview Version is available on the Apple site for Mac OS 8.6/9, OS X and Windows. The preview and the final version shouldn't differ much from each other.
