PowerQuest Partition Magic 7.0 in the test: hard drives under Windows under control

The main program

PowerQuest Partition Magic 7.0

With the well-known and clear design nothing has changed in the previous versions. Little has changed in the program beneath the surface. One of the most important innovations is likely to be the support for the new and revised NTFS file system, which will come onto the market with Windows XP. The old version of Partition Magic could be installed on a Windows XP test system with the new NTFS file system, but with the note that the version might not work properly.

The wizards

For users who are familiar with the If you are not yet very familiar with creating, partitioning, converting or even merging partitions, the wizards are suitable, which, similar to Windows 2000 and ME, relieve the user of a large part of the work and carry out many actions independently.

  • PowerQuest Partition Magic 7.0
With the wizard to create a new partition even on a hard drive on which all he storage space is allocated to partitions, you can easily create a new one. Toall you have to do is tell the wizard which partitions to remove free space from. The only disadvantage of this automatic creation is that the storage space is taken from the other partitions as a percentage of the partition size.

The reallocation of storage space can also be done with the corresponding wizard without any problems. The program then automatically distributes the free space of the individual partitions on a disk evenly across all partitions. The only disadvantage here is again the automatic percentage distribution of the storage space.

Another wizard helps to reduce or enlarge a partition. You can either shrink the drive, which then frees up allocated space, or you can enlarge the partition, then space is removed from one or more other partitions and added to the partition to be enlarged. Again, there is the shortcoming that subtracts the storage space from the other partitions as a percentage.

Partitions can also be copied with a few simple steps. All you have to do is select a partition to copy, tell the wizard where to create the partition for the copy and from which partitions space should be taken for the new partition. By default, Partition Magic places the space for the new partition at the very back of the hard drive. So there are noneShifting of drive letters, which could otherwise make a Windows installation unusable.

When merging two partitions, the wizard for merging partitions is there to help. This is where one of the innovations in Partition Magic comes in. This means that two NTFS partitions can now also be merged under certain conditions. On the one hand, both NTFS partitions must have the same version and, on the other hand, the cluster size on both partitions must be identical, which can be seen very clearly in the screenshot. While drive G on the test system is still running with NTFS 5 from Windows 2000, all other partitions work with the NTFS file system from Windows XP. Partition G is therefore not displayed in the selection. Drive H is also hidden, as it cannot be connected to any other drive.

Anyone who thinks that Partition Magic can only be operated using wizards is on the wrong track. For more experienced users there is still the possibility to adapt partitions or entire hard drives with all the necessary parameters to their own needs. In this way, a partition can be reduced in size, moved or converted to another file system in a few simple steps.

It was noticeable that the program memorized all the individual steps when changing partitions and all of them when making the changes applied successively one after the other. This can be a disadvantage and a significant increase in time if you perform the same action several times.

Partition Magic was not able to play the partition games, which I increased to 20GB in two steps, directly expand from 5GB to 20GB in one step, thoughMore than enough unallocated space was available on the hard disk.

So when making several changes, you should always make sure to get to the desired goal with as few change steps as possible. Here PowerQuest should think about an optimization algorithm.
