PowerQuest Partition Magic 7.0 in the test: hard drives under Windows under control

Version 7 of the well-known Windows program Partition Magic has now been released. With Partition Magic, partitions can be moved, enlarged or reduced in size on hard drives or converted to another file system.

Even Version 6 of Partition Magic had to be put to the test by us. With the current test of version 7, we want to find out what new features the new version contains and whether a change would be worthwhile, and if so for whom

The manual

It is rare that today you still get complete manuals, also in German, with software. All functions of the software are described in detail on 174 pages. This enables beginners to quickly familiarize themselves with the program. However, if problems should arise or errors occur, a detailed chapter with more than 30 pages will help you to eliminate them. A separate chapter in the manual describes the additional program Bootmagic. Bootmagic is a powerful disk management program with which it is possible to manage different operating systems on one computer. When booting, a list with the various operating systems is displayed, similar to the NT loader of Windows NT or 2000.

The Installation

The installation of Partition Magic is relatively easy. After inserting the CD, the automatic setup starts and guides the user through the installation. The only problem with the installation arises when the option 'Create emergency floppy disks' is activated and there is no floppy disk drive in the computer. The setup gets stuck in a loop and can only be ended with the Windows NT/2000 Task Manager. On another test system with a floppy disk drive, however, the three emergency floppy disks could be created without any problems.
