Preface

Once the data is gone, it can only be reconstructed with great effort and a great deal of time. With the right precaution, however, it doesn't even have to get that far. The market is teeming with backup solutions that guarantee convenient data backup as well as convenient data restore. PowerQuest's Drive Image 4 (Pro), which can come up with numerous extras, is particularly outstanding. We wanted to find out whether it is worth investing in the program.

Scope of delivery

In the scope of delivery of the 659 DM expensive Drive Image 4 Pro version (25 licenses) are in addition to the actual Drive Image in 6 languages also includes Partition Magic 6.0 Pro, as well as two thick manuals and the usual registration cards. The company PowerQuest spared no effort and expense with the manualDrive Image 4 Pro donates two of these, sometimes so important, reference works. One deals meticulously with the functions of Drive Image on 266 pages and can be consulted for any problem and will always provide appropriate help. The second manual is for Partition Magic 6.0 Pro. Here, too, there are no defects to be mentioned.

Creating a data backup

A data backup is very easy with Drive Image 4. After the program has automatically exited Windows mode and started its own DOS, the backup of a complete partition can be started. In the following, you only have to specify the source partition and the name of the image file with the appropriate comments.

The image file can be saved directly to another hard drive, streamer, zip drive saved or burned directly to CD. Drive Image brings any drivers required for this with it. Furthermore, you have the choice whether the image should be compressed or not. The degree of compression is between 40 and 50%, depending on what kind of data is stored on the partition. If a new data medium is required during the backup, you will automatically be asked to insert it.

Restore data backup

Restoring an image is also done with just a few clicks. All you have to do is specify the source image and the target hard disk or drive and the process will start; Intervention by the user is no longer necessary.

So that you do not necessarily have to restore a complete image, there is a tool called 'Drive Image File Editor 4.0' with which you can restore individual files from an image. Furthermore, with this tool it is also possible to split an initially large image into several small ones, for example to save them on floppy disk.
