PowerMagic ATI Radeon 8500 in the test: Swan song for the GeForce3?

Quake 3

Quake3 Arena used OpenGL only. The first person shooter is characterized by a large number of polygons and complex scenarios. From a resolution of 1024x768x32, the memory bandwidth requirements of the graphics card are particularly high. Since many games are based on the Quake III engine, the tests with Quake III are very practical. We tested with the settings Normal, Max and High with Release 1.17. It should be noted here that the new ATI Radeon 4.13.7206 driver no longer includes Quake3 optimization.

Another interesting result provided us with the Quake 3 benchmark. While the Radeon 8500 clearly dominates again from a resolution of 1280x1024 in the normal detail settings, only the Radeon 8500 operated at retail clock can keep up with the Geforce3 and again from a resolution of 1280x1024 in the high and max detail settings Stand up to it. The increase in performance by operating the card at retail cycle is only noticeable from this resolution with around 7% -9%.
