The programmable vertex and The pixel unit of the Radeon 8500 is called Smartshader and can only be fully exploited since the introduction of DirectX 8.1. This programmable graphics engine is divided into two areas.
Charisma Engine II The Charisma Engine II has a fixed T&L graphics unit that can calculate 69 million triangles per second, the GeForce3 only manages here 50 million, as well as a programmable vertex shader unit that processes the triangles using the geometry data and can be addressed directly by the game developer with programs with a maximum of 128 instructions.
Pixel Trapesty II This unit was also in the Predecessor exists, but was supplemented by the pixel shader and the number of pixel pipelines was increased from 2 to 4. ATI is based on DirectX 8.1 and so, in contrast to GeForce3, programs can be executed with 22 instead of 12 instructions and 6 instead of 4 of them can refer to texture samples.
