OpenOffice available immediately
The office package of the OpenSource project OpenOffice.org is now available in version 1.0 for Windows, Linux and various Unix derivatives. OpenOffice is the free and free version of StarOffice.
The difference to the large, no longer free office suite from Sun is that some things that are not essential for normal use are missing, including some templates, fonts, file filters and a large collection of clipart. The two most important innovations compared to StarOffice 5 include the lack of an office desktop and an XML-based file format for the documents, which enables OpenOffice documents to be exchanged between the individual platforms without problems. The office package includes a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation software and a drawing program. With the import and export filters for documents, great importance was attached to ensuring that Microsoft Office documents are processed as error-free as possible.
