News from the AMD Hammer chipsets

AMD has announced some facts about the upcoming chipsets for the AMD 64 bit processors of the 'Hammer' series. The new chipsets should be extremely flexible and modular and so easy to use in all areas.

The chipset should be called AMD-8000 and consists of the AMD-8111 HyperTransport I/O controller, the AMD-8131 HyperTransport PCI-X tunnel and the AMD-8151 HyperTransport AGP3.0 tunnel. With the help of the new HyperTransport technology, the individual components should be able to exchange data with a bandwidth of up to 12.8 GB/s. Compared to the current bandwidth of 266 MB/s that would be a 48-fold increase. HyperTransport also supports external bus systems such as PCI and 10 GB Ethernet.

Due to their flexibility, the chipsets can be used in desktops -PCs, notebooks, workstations and servers can be easily adapted by the manufacturer. At the same time, AMD has emphasized the close cooperation with the large chipset manufacturers Ali, Nvidia, SiS and VIA, who develop their own chipset solutions for the 'hammer' CPUs from AMD. The AMD-8000 is to be presented in the fourth quarter of the year, at the same time as the introduction of the first 'hammer' processors.
