New supercomputer in operation

682 Alpha servers each with four EV68 microprocessors from Compaq, 2.7 terabytes of main memory, more than 50 terabytes of hard disk space and the Tru64 Unix operating system.

These are the data that make up the 'terascale Computing System (TCS) ', which has now been put into operation at the Supercomputing Center of the University of Pittsburgh, the second fastest supercomputer in the world. As the first civilian super PC, it overcomes the hurdle of six teraflops and only has to admit defeat by IBM's ASCII-White.
