New Seagate HighSpeed Plates
Storage media manufacturer Seagate presents the Cheetah 36XL and Cheetah 73LP, two new hard drive families that shine with a rotation speed of 10,000 rpm. Both disks are operated on the Ultra160-SCSI interface and offer a 4MB cache. Seagate's new top series, the Cheetah 73LP, achieves a maximum data stream of a sensational 63.9 MB/s, with an access time of 4.6 ms.
The Cheetah 73LP will be offered with a capacity of 36 and 73GB, whereby the 36GB variant will appear exclusively with a fiber channel interface. The 73GB version is said to be priced at $ 1139. The Cheetah 36XL, on the other hand, will be available in sizes of 9.2, 18.4 and 36.7GB, with the maximum transfer rate being 46.1MB/s and the average access time being 5.2ms. This means that the drive is essentially slower than the Cheetah 73LP, but still faster than a high-performance IDE hard drive. For 615 US dollars, which are to be paid for the 36.7GB model, you get hard drives with a capacity of 70GB and more in IDE realms. Both hard drives will be available in the first quarter of 2001.
