New dual DVD chips from Mediatek

To get the DVD/RW market moving, Mediatek is now presenting the first samples of its chips for DVD/RW drives. The chip supports both the DVD + R/RW and DVD-R/RW standards, which are currently competing on the market.

So far, neither of the two standards has really been able to establish itself on the market. The DVD-R/RW standard was developed by Pioneer, while the DVD + R/RW standard is supported by HP, Dell and Microsoft, among others . The new chip now allows the construction of DVD burners that support both standards and are not dependent on one type of blank. The chip is attracting great interest in Taiwan because it is cheaper than imports from Europe or Japan and will soon also support the DVD-RAM standard. So far, dual DVD drives are only available from Sony, priced between around $ 300 and $ 410. The first dual DVDs with a Mediatek chip are expected to come onto the market in early 2003.
