New CD format from Sony
Sony will soon be releasing a successor to the now outdated CD. The capacity of the 'double-density' data carriers is increased to 1.3 gigabytes.
Sony achieves this by reducing the track spacing from 1.6 to 1.1 micrometers. At the same time, the pit distance is also reduced, which results in a higher data density. Manufacturers only have to make minimal changes to take advantage of this new standard. The end users unfortunately cannot use the 'double density' media with their old drives and burners and therefore have to buy new devices.
