Netscape 7.0 Preview Release 1 released

With version 6 of its browser suite, Netscape has gained a rather dubious reputation, which they want to make up for with the Mozilla 1.0 RC2-based release Netscape 7.0. A first preview, including in German, has been available for download since today.

As changes compared to version 6.x, things are touted that Mozilla users have known for a few versions, including the 'Tabbed Browsing', with which you only have one browser window open, similar to Opera, and you can switch back and forth between the opened websites using tabs. It is questionable, however, whether this feature will be widely used, as it cannot be activated by default, but instead has to use the Ctrl key or the context menu of a link in addition to a mouse click. However, it is commendable that Netscape has summarized all important innovations in a clear and understandable way. For example, you are made aware of the practical function for grouping favorites or bookmarks, with which you can open several bookmarks in the same group in one fell swoop, with the tabs mentioned then being used. In addition, the instant messengers AIM and ICQ have been integrated into the interface. We do not want to go into any further changes, especially those affecting the e-mail client, at this point, as we have already done this in part in Mozilla News and Netscape has summarized this itself.

However, if you look a bit 'behind the scenes', you will notice that Netscape 7 is partially in Things functional scope was cut. For example, the option to prevent automatic popups is missing, as is the option to block images that are not sent by the current server (i.e. in 99% of cases advertising banners). The commercial ones seem very clear hereAOL Netscape's interests to play a role.

When downloading it, you immediately notice that Netscape has once again increased the file size considerably. If Netscape 6.2.3 came with a file size of 26.6MB, version 7 already weighs 31MB. Current Mozilla versions are significantly lower with just over 10MB. It is up to the user to decide whether the integrated messenger and the supplied software such as Real Player 8 are more important to them than the options mentioned, which can make surfing a lot more pleasant
