MP3 inventor receives German Future Prize

The engineer Karlheinz Brandenburg and his team were awarded the German Future Prize 2000 for the development of the MP3 standard for compressing digital music. The award, endowed with 500,000 DM, was presented by Federal President Johannes Rau on Thursday evening at the EXPO.

Karlheinz Brandenburg and his team developed the MP3 standard for compressing music based on basic research by the Frauenhofer Institute. He was able to prevail against three other projects that were also in the final selection for the German Future Prize.
