Micron shows SSD portfolio and new form factor
Another well-known name from the semiconductor industry entered the Solid State Disks market this week with Micron, which is known to many for its high-quality memory chips. The three new flash product lines are all called RealSSD and are produced in sizes between one and 64 GB.
The second product line, RealSSD Embedded USB, is, as the name suggests, products for the embedded market (industrial PCs and blade servers), which are connected via an internal USB port. The available capacities range from one to eight GB, the data transfer rates are according to the interface with up to 33 MB/s permanent read - and up to 23 MB/s permanent write rate correspondingly lower. The start of mass production of the embedded line is planned for this year, but the probable prices have not yet been determined figure>
The third new product line under the label RealSSD includes flash modules that are similar in shape to main memory, but in contrast to this, have a SATA 300 interface. The small size of 25 x 133.5 x 4 mm (H x L x D) compared to hard disk housings results in a lower weight, better air flow in the housing and easier and safer installation, which Micron is specifically targeting for use in enterprise servers . But laptop manufacturers could also be enthusiastic about the new form factor and its advantages. There is not yet a date for the market launch, Micron is currently looking for an OEM manufacturer to cooperate with.
