Maxtor with a new model range
Maxtor has announced three new hard drives with a capacity of 10, 15 and 20 GB with the 541DX series. All plates have an Ultra ATA/100 interface and rotate at a moderate 5400 rpm.
Beside these more common features, the hard disks will stand out from the competition primarily through their so-called single head design. This concept is based on the combination of read and write heads and thus enables the heads to be halved, which in turn enables fewer parts to be processed and thereby increases the reliability of the disks. Furthermore, Maxtor is able to reduce the height of the panel to 17 mm. The storage disks also contribute to this, each of which has a capacity of 20 Gbytes. In order to further improve the service life and data security, the hard disks also have an improved load/unload ramp mechanism that reliably locks the heads in their rest position if the disk is not working. Maxtor has not yet been able to say exactly when and at what price the products will be available from dealers.
