Internet from the socket
Siemens AG announced today that it will withdraw from the Powerline project with immediate effect. The reason for this withdrawal was the still unresolved legal framework both in Germany and in Europe.
Fundamental questions such as costs, monopoly regulations or the scope of services are still unanswered. Siemens now wants to concentrate more on the areas of Internet convergence and broadband technologies, but they want to keep an eye on developments in this sector and, if necessary, resume activities. Siemens' previous partner, EnBW, wants to continue the project without Siemens and start with Powerline in the summer. In Ellwangen, 7,500 customers will initially have Internet access via the socket. The Swiss company Ascom continues to supply the access devices.
