Intel ships Itanium 2

Last week, based on British sources, TecChannel suspected that Intel would start shipping the 2nd generation of the 64-bit processor, the Itanium 2, this week. Today Intel officially confirmed this step in a press release.

The CPU is used on boards with Intel's E8870- Chipset that can address two to sixteen processors. Performance and prices practically correspond to the information that we mentioned in the middle of last week ($ 1.338 to $ 4.226). It remains to be seen whether Intel actually achieves the planned breakthrough in the high-end server market. However, they proudly announce that the world's leading software developers are currently working on compatible programs.

The world's leading enterprise software makers are building commercial applications for Itanium 2-based systems, including BEA Weblogic, i2 Supply Chain and Factory Planner, IBM DB2 and Websphere, Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Oracle9i Database and Oracle9i Application Server, Reuters financial services platforms, SAP R/3 and APO with LiveCache, and SAS v9.0.
