The audio compression method MP3 developed in 1985 is the predominant format today for music. It is supported by a wide range of end devices and offers the lastFurther development even support for 5.1 multi-channel audio . The spectrum of encoders for MP3 is diverse. For our test, we have selected two representatives.

The free software Lame , which is used by various programs. We are testing with Beta 2 from Lame 3.97. This is a 32-bit application that delivers performance at the level of the last final version 3.96.1 and does not make use of multiple processor cores. Dual-core processors therefore only benefit when several files are converted in parallel. In addition to this version, there is a feasibility study ( documentation ) that shows that Lame can be optimized to a limited extent for multi-processor systems. Versions of this experimental alpha version are available with Intel and Microsoft compilers for Windows x32 and x64. Due to the performance, we are testing the version with the Intel Compiler.

We repeat the procedure with iTunes. It will save the same music file once in the .mp3 formatconverted, then to AAC. In the settings, care was taken to ensure that the quality settings of 192 kbit/s were also retained.
