Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 & Q9450 in the test: The Ferrari among CPUs

Test system

In order to enable a fair and realistic comparison between the opponents, all tests are carried out in a closed midi tower with factory-installed fans (a fansuction on the back, one blowing in the front of the hard drive cage) in order to also be aware of thermal problems with the bolides. A 'Coolermaster Stacker RC-832 SE' is used, which was made available to us by Caseking . The housing allows the use of up to nine 120 mm fans, both of which are included in the scope of delivery.

The new Core 2 Extreme QX9770 requires the use of DDR3-1600 for the first time. In addition to the Core 2 Extreme QX9650 based on the Yorkfield core, its predecessor, the QX6850 with Kentsfield core in G0 stepping, is used as a comparison processor. Both processors rely on an effectively 1333 MHz fast front-side bus, which is why DDR3-1333 as main memory optimally supports the tasks of the processors. A Q6600 with 2.40 GHz in G0 stepping and a Q6700 with 2.66 GHz in the older B3 stepping are used to compare the entry-level market with four cores. In both cases, DDR3-1066 is used analogously to the FSB1066. Both processors should defend themselves against the upcoming Core 2 Quad Q9450 with 2.66 GHz, which has the same clock frequency as the Q6700, but can fall back on an effective FSB of 1333 MHz.

As am highest clocked,'Old' dual-core offshoot with a free multiplier from Intel is the old warhorse X6800 with DDR3-1066 memory. And since the processors of the E6x50 series are particularly popular, we have also included these in the overview in the form of the Core 2 Duo E6850 and the E6750. Both models have made the FSB1333 socially acceptable since their launch in summer 2007. For a further comparison downwards, we round off the test with the older processors Core 2 Duo E6600 and E6420.

Benchmarks

All benchmarks were carried out under Windows Vista with a resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels. However, there may be slight deviations in the resolutions and graphics settings, especially with games. How exactly these look like is mentioned on the spot in the text.
