Intel announces 1.4 GHz Pentium III-S
With the 1.4 GHz version of the Pentium III-S, Intel has raised the bar for server processors based on PIII a further piece today. Compared to the desktop PIII, the 'S' version has a much larger L2 cache of 512KB.
This can provide a good performance boost, especially in web servers. So far, the introduction of the CPU had probably been delayed, as this processor could also have been dangerous for the higher clocked P4 systems. The Northwood core presented yesterday, however, also has half a megabyte of memory and thus seems to have maneuvered the Pentium 4 out of the danger zone. The PIII-S 1.4GHz will initially be available for $ 315 in quantities of 1,000, which is $ 49 less than a P4 2GHz with a Northwood core.
