IBM will deliver supercomputers to Switzerland
The e-server p690 with the code name 'Regatta' is used in materials research and life science. IBM received the order from the 'Swiss Center for Scientific Computing' in Zurich.
The supercomputer, which will achieve a performance of 1.3 teraflops, uses Power4 technology and was announced by IBM last year . It is the only Unix/Linux computer that has various options for self-diagnosis, self-healing and self-configuration, according to IBM. The Power4 chip from IBM is the first processor in the world that is in itself a multiprocessor system. Each of the chips is equipped with two processors, a large cache memory and a system switch. Four of the Power4 chips clocked at up to 1.3 GHz are located on the multi-chip board.
