Hard drives with 100GB from Maxtor
The hard drive manufacturer Maxtor has been offering an IDE hard drive with 100GB storage capacity since today. It is an addition to the DiamondMax hard drive series, which works at 5400 revolutions per minute.
The new model , the DiamondMax D536X, accommodates the data on three magnetic disks, which corresponds to a data density of 33GB per disk. The hard disk has a 2MB internal cache, as is usual with the DiamondMax family. Another new model at Maxtor is the DiamondMax D540X, which is delivered in versions with a maximum of 80GB, but stores the data on only two 40GB disks. Similar to the D536X, it also has the same number of revolutions and an equally large cache. According to Maxtor, it has started mass production of both hard drives, with the 100GB hard drive already available from Vobis. The only question that remains is how one should still use such memory sizes, especially if one is not necessarily dealing with video editing or image processing.
