Freeware MPEG4 codec available from Sigma Designs

Sigma Designs, known for its IP video streaming hardware, is introducing its own MPEG4 video codec, the REALmagic MPEG4 video codec. For private use it is now available for download free of charge.

However, it is not allowed to distribute copyrighted material as noted in the license terms for downloading the codec. The REALmagic MPEG4 video codec should be usable as a standard codec so that it can be used from a large number of applications. Applications such as Adobe Premiere or Ulead's Video Studio are mentioned as examples. The codec should be able to generate ISO-compliant MPEG4 video bitstreams, support adaptive quantization, B-frames, intelligent deinterlacing and should be able to generate audio in variable bit rates (VBR) and constant bit rates (CBR). According to Sigma Designs, the REALmagic MPEG4 video codec on Pentium 3 and AMD Athlons in the single-pass process with high quality should be considerably faster than other MPEG4 codecs.
