First step towards online voting

Germany's polling stations are to be networked with one another by 2006 so that voters can cast their votes from anywhere. This does not mean that you can give weight to your political opinion from your home computer, but at least this should be possible from every polling station.

So you no longer become that determined by the election officer and possibly a little further have to make a pilgrimage to distant polling stations. It remains to be seen whether this is the main reason why some citizens do not consider it necessary to vote. According to Chancellor Mayor Hans Martin Bury, we are still a long way away from correct online elections, as on the one hand the identity of the voter must be clearly established, but on the other hand the election must take place completely anonymously. He added, however, that this problem was already being worked on without going into the details.
