First copies of the AMD K6-2 + available
The AMD K6-2 + processor is now also available in Germany, albeit only in limited numbers. The CPU, which is manufactured in the 0.18 micron process, is designed for operation in mobile devices.
The AMD K6-2 + can also be operated in desktop systems, but the mainboard must have an operating voltage of can only deliver 2 volts. The K6-2 + has a 128 KByte level 2 cache, which is only half as much as the K6-III. The full power of the processor can only be used if the mainboard manufacturer provides a suitable BIOS update, otherwise the K6-2 + will not be recognized correctly and will sometimes lag behind the K6-2 in terms of performance. A 500 MHz variant is expected to cost 210 DM, which is more than a Duron with 600 MHz currently costs. The high price was to be expected because AMD offers the CPUs specifically for laptops.
