FireWire now 4x faster
The FireWire interface is neatly drilled out so that it is four times as fast as the current standard. The current designation IEEE 1394 is given the designation IEEE 1394b in the new standard and supports data rates of 800 Mbit/s or 1.6 Gbit/s. This means that it reaches four times the speed of its predecessor. An expansion to 3.2 Gbit/s is even possible.
In addition to the transmission rate, the transmission distance has also been increased. Twisted pair cables with a length of 100 meters can achieve up to 100 Mbit/s and with fiber optic cables even 1.6 Gbit/s are retained over 100m. The first chips with the new technology have already been delivered as samples. In addition, a new transmission technology, BOSS (Bus Owner Supervisor Selector), enables the parallel transmission of control and data signals. However, the first devices that support the new technology are only expected in 3-4 months.
