Copyright dispute over the brand name 'XBox'

Microsoft has apparently failed to reserve the brand name Xbox in time for their upcoming game console. The company X-Box Technologies made several applications for this trademark in early 1999 and is now insisting on its rights.

Several software companies are grouped under the X-Box Technologies. If necessary, the company wants to sue Microsoft because the negotiations have so far not led to any result. The domain xboxtechnologies.com has been registered for this company since July 1999. Microsoft only secured the domain xbox.com in February 2000. This failure by Microsoft could be explained by the fact that 'Xbox' was actually just the code name for the new console. Surveys then showed that the name 'Xbox' is best received worldwide, so Microsoft decided to publish the console under this name. Since the design of the Xbox is based on the name, a simple renaming on the part of Microsoft is unlikely to occur, and the console is already too well known under this name to choose such a path.
