Aquamark D3D

Aquamark is a DirectX 8.0 benchmark from Massive and, like Aquanox, is based on the Krass engine, which is why it is a kind of hybrid between a synthetic test and a real world benchmark. A detailed underwater world is shown. AquaMark uses the hardware shaders of DirectX8 graphics cards, if available. With more than 160 vertex shaders, special effects such as layered fog, caustics, photo-realistic materials, radiosity lighting and shadows are created in real time. Pixel shaders are used for bump mapping and bespoke lighting effects. However, the frame rates from the Aquamark are significantly lower than those of Aquanox due to the significantly higher level of detail. Both cards were of course tested with the setting of 40MB texture size and activated pixel shader effects.

Here we have decided toto include the 1152 resolution in the graph in order to better show the slightly different course of the two performance curves. The Geforce4 drops by an almost constant 10fps with each resolution level, while the Radeon9700pro drops significantly less sharply in the first three resolutions (starting from a higher basic level) and only experiences a twice as strong drop in absolute numbers with 1600x1200x32 as before. That it is still faster than a GF4 Ti4600 in 1280x1024 should be emphasized here once again.

Since there is an abundance of bandwidth and the GF4 would have to break in much more strongly (if one assumes that the Rendering pipeline does not consistently hinder the development of performance) one can assume that the Radeon9700pro is also slowly reaching the limits of its possibilities in the Aquamark in 1600, but is still able to produce very good frame rates.

At The quality settings are the same, sad for the GeForce, as before: Even with almost completely removed podium artifacts and strongly sharpened textures, the Radeon9700pro lets the Aquamark run smoothly at least up to 1024x768. This is slowly becoming critical for her too.
